There are many ways to save money around your home, but this simple switch is one of the easiest…as long as you’re not afraid of the dark!
Are you guilty of leaving lights on around your home at night? You are not alone, an estimated 4.7 million households leave at least one light on overnight.
A new survey from homeware and furniture retailer Utility Design has revealed that we are spending 77 pence for every 8 hours we sleep with a light on, equating to £281 per year!
An increase in energy bills isn’t the only side effect, leaving one light on overnight is creating 8,985,600kg of extra carbon dioxide emissions, the equivalent of 15 round-the-world flights!
Beyond bedtime, around 14 million Brits admit to regularly leaving lights on when leaving the house. This equates to a staggering amount of carbon emissions, the equivalent of 45 flights in a day.
The survey also revealed that whether to leave a light on overnight is one of the top home-related arguments between couples, with 67% voting it the top issue they argue about. Further results revealed that men are twice as likely to leave lights on when leaving the house than women.
Richard Skelton, Brand and E-commerce Director at Utility Design said,“Lightning can make or break an indoor or outdoor space, and we recognise the importance of well designed, functional lighting. However, this study goes to show that its worth being conscious of our energy consumption. Switching off unused lights can have a big impact, from both a money saving and environmental point of view.”
When all the figures are tallied up, whether we’re asleep, out of the house or just in another room, switching lights off as we go could save around £838 per year!Source: idealhome.co.uk
